24th Sunday Ordinary Time God is mercy

Sir. 27:30- 28:7; Ps. 103:1-4, 9-12; Rom.14:7-9; Mt. 18:21-35

God is mercy and mercy is forgiveness!  “Remember your last days” before you proclaim “no justice no peace”.  We are called to “forgive your neighbor’s injustice”.  Why do we “hug them tight” our wrath and anger when they are the poison of death while others remain alive?  In part, it is because we fail to see ourselves in the sinner.  In the heart we give thanks we are not like them and justify our “’righteousness” for anger and vengeance. 

False righteousness is like rejecting the leper for his visible disease while walking in ignorance of the invisible cancer growing inside.  “Remember death and decay and cease to sin!”  Jesus likened “the kingdom of heaven” to a king who “settles accounts with his servants” and whether “we live or die we are the Lord’s” with an account in need of justice. 

Justice is the offering of Jesus for our sins to the merciful.  It is conditional on our forgiveness of our brothers and sisters, neighbors and strangers “from the heart” for the injustice.  Jesus speaks to the disciples that “heaven is likened…(to) his master (who) handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt”.  As servants of the Lord there is a place for those who fail to forgive for their debt which as a Catholic church we identify as purgatory.  Purgatory is for the chosen who remain with the stain of sin of unforgiveness among others. 

We live in times when the streets proclaim “no justice no peace” seeking reparation for a history of people who have long passed from the earth.  Some believe you can be the victim of other’s history standing in for another’s suffering with expectation of compensation as an entitlement.  They “hold them tight” wrath and anger for a historical identity as victims without personal sacrifice of suffering in the name of social justice.  This is likened to blaming God for the sin of Adam and Eve for falling into a world of sin and suffering.  It is a ludicrous philosophy of victimization for all creation. 

Who do we need to forgive?  It begins in the domestic church, husbands and wives must forgive each other from the heart; children forgive parents for imperfect parenting at best and abandonment or abuse at worse; forgive our friends and neighbors who we have stopped talking with.  The root of forgiveness lies at the seed of love from the home.  It begins with a decision to forgive and a prayer of petition to receive the grace of forgiveness in the heart.  We don’t wait for a feeling to forgive to arrive before forgiving.  We act on the command of God to forgive and trust God with our heart to bring us peace.

It is said by the grace of God many have not seen the inside of a prison.  Among those who have been imprisoned some leave more vengeful than before to commit more crime while others are humbled to never return.  One man appeared on AGT (America’s Got Talent) telling his story of being convicted of a crime against a woman who identified him as the perpetrator.  He had three witnesses who testified he was home at the time of the crime but was convicted and served 37 years in prison before DNA proved his innocence.  Singing kept him hopeful with courage to persevere.  Released his dream to appear on AGT came true as a man of peace.  He survived because his heart was not imprisoned by the walls of wrath and anger.  Many more live outside the walls of prison but their hearts are imprisoned by wrath and anger while they hold tight the key of freedom, the choice of forgiveness.  Choose forgiveness and receive mercy.

17th Sunday Ordinary Time

1 Kgs. 3:5, 7-12; Ps. 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-130; Rom. 8:28-30; Mt. 13:44-52

The kingdom of heaven is not an entitlement we collect by simply claiming “I believe in God”.  The kingdom of God is something we must seek and sacrifice for to be given the understanding of Solomon.  We are to first be conformed to the image of his Son to enter the kingdom of God.  In an age where we value acceptance of “our identity” as we claim it, we lose sight of identifying with the image of God’s son who is “other” than ourselves.  We are “right” in seeking God’s image as our being and “wrong” in claiming our own as an entitlement. 

Wisdom is from God to give an “understanding heart…to distinguish right from wrong” and respond with prudence in doing his will.  In the gospel today, Jesus continues with his parables to the wise and prudent describing the significance of the kingdom of God to humanity as the eternal love and longing of our purpose of life.  The wisdom of Solomon was judging rightly with what to ask for in service to God’s kingdom.  Solomon’s love for God was in being the best he was created to be as the leader of his people.  Our love for God then is in being our best in responding to our calling in life in service to others. 

This is challenging and difficult if not impossible without the grace from God that comes by searching with the heart of understanding God’s will for our personal calling in life.  In the worst of situations and in the best of situations “all things work for good for those who love God.”  God is mercy when we seek our identity in him. 

For some time, it was popular with the youth to carry bracelets with the letters WWJD meaning “what would Jesus do”.  This is seeking out our identity in him, inviting him into our “space” and time which if we claim to belong to Jesus is his rightful space and seeking understanding through the Spirit to respond in his image in this moment of our being. 

Now is the time to recapture that moment of truth “what Jesus will do through his servant of love”.  Such great challenges have been conquered by the saints and souls who surrender to God actively seeking to do his will.  Have we asked him today “what is your will for me this day Lord?” 

Sometimes we compartmentalize life into steps, such as step one is to “pray” and step two is “go forth”, and step three is “action” as a cognitive process like learning to type where all the keys are and consciously thinking of all the keys.  Learning to type is a cognitive process but typing is the unconscious process of being able to “just do it”.  In the same way Christianity is taking all our prayers, devotions, and understanding to “just do it” in charity being the image of God through the Spirit that is with us.  Let us give God the freedom to “just do it” in our being through an act of the will and the mystery of his kingdom will reign in us. 

The evil one is “prowling about the world seeking the ruins of souls” when we see hatred, violence, and destruction justified a “right” and authority, order, and peace shamed as “wrong” in an effort to create a new “kingdom” not of God but of this world.  It is a spiritual battle for the souls of the people fought not only on the streets but in every church and home.  One day I was struggling with making a difficult decision as a child and I asked my mother for guidance in her “understanding”.  I was totally surprised when she responded “you will have to decide”.  In her wisdom the right answer needed to come from me through the Spirit given at baptism.  She understood I would be the one who would live with the consequences of the decision. 

This nation is facing a difficult decision and we each must decide where our Christian values are best represented and supported not simply in our inner being but in our outward expression in the public square.  As Catholics we value the outward expression of our faith in statues, crosses, the arts, and even the sciences together with our right to assembly and worship.  This cannot be governed, shamed, or silenced by an oppressive voice in the public domain.  Today “you will have to decide” to who you surrender power to, either God and the kingdom of heaven or the evil one and the kingdom of hell. Blessed Mother Mary pray for us.

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe

2 Sam. 5:1-3; Ps. 122:1-5; 2 Col. 1:12-20; Lk. 23:35-43

“This is the King of the Jews”.  The sign on the cross intended as a mockery was the fulfillment of the prophesy “the chosen one”.  “He is the image of the invisible God.”  How many representations of Jesus are made in picture, statue, woven yet regardless of the difference in image they give testimony to the one reality “the image of the invisible God” came in human condition into our history, the uncreated shares in the created humanity to be one with us. 

“For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth”.  This gives testimony to the Trinity, one God in three persons who “is before all things…and in him all things hold together.”  All “things” exist by his will created for a purpose, a divine purpose.  Are we living our divine purpose?  This is where our joy lies. 

“He is the beginning, the first born from the dead.”  The God of the living for those living in Christ where death is but a rite of passage from our mortal bodies into the eternal state…but not all.  Not everyone accepts the gift of life in Christ.  Just as in times past some still believe there is no resurrection for the dead while others believe there is no hell and all inherit the kingdom.  Free will means there is a choice.  Just as scriptures speaks to the fallen angels from grace so is the fallen humanity by choice.  Choose wisely!

His desire is “that in all things he himself might be preeminent.”  Christ the King first in our lives.  In his death and resurrection his kingship in the world “all the fullness was pleased to dwell.”  Jesus dwells in us halleluiah!  The King of Glory comes into our being to be one with us as he is in the Father and the Spirit.  It is an invitation of transformation.  Sometimes this is described as “less of me and more of Christ in me” as a giving up of our existence a “dying to self”.  The God of the living is not asking for our death but to come and give us the fullness of life in him.  Imagine if we allow him in every moment of life to transform us into being the greatest he created us to be “all the fullness” of life, love, and liberty is ours, free in Christ the King.

“It is through him to reconcile all things for him.”  Our sins are forgiven through him as he promises the criminal “today you will be with me in Paradise”.  Did he steal heaven or did Jesus snatch him out of the grasp of the devil because he turned to Jesus for mercy?  Jesus saves!  The wait for his kingdom has passed.  Have we passed into the kingdom already present for us or is it passing us by as we reject the call to reconciliation?  Jesus have mercy on us.

Jesus invites us into his love “making peace by the blood of his cross.”  Many criticize the Church for keeping the image of Christ on the cross when he has resurrected.  His presence on the cross is for the unrepentant sinner and today we have many in this world.  He is the sacrifice on the altar to continue his suffering for our sins.  When will we accept the fullness of his love and why the resistance to such an invitation? 

I would call this a modern version of a parable.  There were three men being offered a choice between a rock and a diamond.  One was Jew, one Catholic, and one Protestant.  Each man chooses the rock and rejects the perfect diamond.  The Jewish man says he chooses the rock because of his sense of unworthiness.  The Catholic man says he chooses the rock out of fear of responsibility for the diamond.  The Protestant man says he chooses the rock to make it into its own diamond according to his image.   Finally, a child playing passes by and grabs the diamond with no self-awareness, no fear, no intent but to enjoy its beauty.  Grab the diamond, what are we waiting for? 

The fullness of the diamond is in the Eucharist, body, blood, soul, and divinity.  The kingdom is present and it comes into our bodies, soul, and spirit.  Diamonds make laser cuts to root out the imperfect.  The Eucharist is the diamond to receive this day and allow the fullness of Jesus to work in our being transforming us into his image, a diamond of holiness.  All are invited to come and receive in this sacrament his love.  The Church sets a process in Baptism and Reconciliation as our testimony of faith to give visible signs of our love of God.  Receive and rejoice in Christ the King of Glory.  Remember diamonds are forever!
